Not every standalone NFL contest can be a banger. Sunday Night Football in NFL Week 8 features an uninspiring NFC East showdown between the Washington Commanders and the Philadelphia Eagles. Both teams had playoff aspirations at the start of the year, but neither has lived up to expectations: The Eagles are 2-5, while the Commanders are 1-4-1.

The Eagles are clearly the bigger disappointment. They were the favorites to win the division, just as they’d done in each of the past two seasons. Losing Jalen Hurts has clearly hurt, but the rest of the roster is not as talented as in years past. Specifically, their defensive metrics have fallen off a cliff.

Meanwhile, Washington has been more competitive than their record suggests. They had no business tying vs. the Giants, while three of their four losses have been by one score. Their only blowout loss came in London with the team down to their third-string quarterback.

With that in mind, it’s not a huge shocker that the Commanders are favored in this contest. But do they deserve to be 5.5-point favorites? Let’s break down the NFL betting angles for Sunday Night Football.

Washington Commanders vs. Philadelphia Eagles Betting Odds For Week 8

  • Spread: Commanders -5.5 (-115; FanDuel)
  • Moneyline: Commanders -250; Eagles +215
  • Game Total: 40.5

Dating back to last season, the Eagles’ offense has been a disaster. They’re currently 29th in EPA per play, and that number only figures to fall with Hurts out of the picture. Tanner McKee has been a clear downgrade at quarterback. He’s averaged just 5.3 adjusted yards per attempt so far this season, despite taking the field in friendly matchups vs. the Cowboys and Panthers.

Saquon Barkley being at full strength would be a help, but it’s unclear if that’s the case. He returned to the lineup last week but was limited to just 10 total snaps. He sat out the entire fourth quarter after picking up a back injury, but he was able to return to practice this week. Barkley will be in the lineup vs. the Commanders, but who knows how much of a workload he’ll actually handle.

McKee is also dealing with some absences at receiver. DeVonta Smith will miss another contest, and he leads the team with a 32% target share. Dontayvion Wicks will also miss his second straight contest. Makai Lemon and Darius Cooper will take on larger roles as a result, and both players have some potential vs. Washington. Their defense hasn’t been great this season, and defensive tackle Daron Payne suffered a season-ending injury on Friday.

Still, most of the offense figures to come from the Commanders’ side. Their offense hasn’t been elite this season, but it’s been pretty good with Jayden Daniels under center. He’s been pretty close to his rookie-level production, averaging 7.4 adjusted yards per attempt as a passer with five touchdowns and zero interceptions. He’s also added 53.3 rushing yards per game with two scores on the ground.

His rushing production could pay dividends vs. the Eagles. They’re currently 31st in the league in EPA per rush defensively, and they just allowed 204 yards on the ground to the Cowboys last week. They’ve allowed at least 100 rushing yards in every game this season.

The one caveat is that the Commanders will be without their lead RB in Jacory Croskey-Merritt. He’s currently on IR, leaving Rachaad White, Austin Ekeler and Jeremy McNichols as the team’s primary RBs. As long as that trio can provide some positive production, the Commanders should be able to move the chains.

Prediction & Pick For Commanders vs. Eagles Week 8 Matchup

  • The Pick: Commanders -5.5 (-115; FanDuel)

It’s pretty crazy to see a 1-4-1 team favored by nearly a touchdown. Even crazier, I still think that number might be too low. The Commanders have moved to six-point favorites across most of the industry, and the line could continue to creep up before kickoff.

I took the Commanders in my Week 8 best bets column, so it’s no surprise I like them here. The Commanders nearly beat the Eagles back in Week 1, and that was in Philly with a healthy Hurts.

Losing Payne is a definite blow for the Commanders’ defense, but it shouldn’t matter too much in this spot. Barkley could have success when he’s on the field, but I’m not sure it’ll be enough to make a real difference.

Best Player Prop Bet For Commanders vs. Eagles

Rachaad White Over 11.5 Rush Attempts (+100; Caesars)

With Croskey-Merritt sidelined, White is the Commanders' clear-cut best running back. You could make a strong argument that he’s their best RB even with Croskey-Merritt available. He leads the team’s RBs with 4.0 yards per attempt this season.

White has yet to receive more than eight carries in a game, so jumping all the way up to 12 feels like a big ask. That said, it’s not as big as you might realize. White had a 70% snap share and 54% carry share in the team’s last contest; they just didn’t run the ball much vs. the 49ers. They played most of that game from behind, falling into a 23-3 deficit in the third quarter.

The game script should be significantly more favorable this week. If the Commanders can play from in front and White maintains 50-60% of the carries, getting to 12 should be very doable. We currently have him projected for 12.9 attempts, so I like the value with Over 11.5 at even money.
