2026 NFL Draft Watching Tips For Dummies: Roger Goodell Will Get Booed

Cooterdoodle shares NFL Draft watching tips for both new fans and those who are catching up on NFL news.

So you haven't paid attention to the NFL this offseason? Or maybe you're going to watch the NFL Draft with some friends for the very first time? Don't sweat it!

This is your crash course into everything you need to know. Lock in now so you won't feel like an outsider later.

NFL Draft 2026 Crash Course for Newbies

Even if you’re new to the draft, it can't hurt for you to be "in the know." Here’s your quick-fix catch up from the last few months so you can hold conversations with the best of ‘em.

Kirk Cousins is a Raider now

Sure, Fernando Mendoza is all but a lock for the Raiders' first-round pick, but that doesn't mean he's starting right away in Week 1. Cousins signed with LV this offseason and looks to make $20M guaranteed in 2026.

That kind of payday suggests Mendoza will likely sit the bench most of the season as he learns from the QB vet.

The One-Liner: "I doubt Mendoza even starts until..." Go ahead. Pick a number between 1-18.

Miami has … Changed.

Not only do the Dolphins have two first-round picks, they also have four in Round 3 (11 total through seven rounds in 2026).

But the real story will come from how the Dolphins decide to stack their team with this kind of draft capital. They’ve lost a majority of their offensive roster since last season. No Tua Tagovailoa (ATL). No Jaylen Waddle (DEN). No Tyreek Hill (FA).

They did sign Malik Willis, but who's the poor guy going to throw it to?

The One-Liner: In the event MIA does not draft a WR with either of its R1 picks (as was projected in our latest mock draft):  “So… Is this guy going to line up in the slot or what?"

A.J. Brown Trade Watch

The whispers of a potential A.J. Brown trade have ebbed and flowed all offseason long. But the Eagles stand to save $40M in dead money if they keep the deals at bay until after June 1. So there’s no expectation for novel Brown headlines before then.

However, (here’s the fun part!), PHI’s draft picks will likely give us more to gossip about while we wait. Because if the Eagles decide to spend a lot of draft capital on a WR in the draft, it would essentially be a gas tank poured over an open flame.

The A.J. Brown trade rumors would immediately start flaring up again once the pick is in.

The One-Liner: “I guess A.J. Brown is a Patriot after all, huh?”

San Franciscan Draft Prep

I don't care who the 49ers draft this week. It won't matter. Not after GM John Lynch's comments on Monday.

And I don't care if Lynch's use of AI to evaluate draft picks is being taken out of context. It won't matter.

I don't care if the 49ers draft a position they're in dire need of. It won't matter.

After a quote like this, I just hope they don't blow it. Could you imagine the memes if they decide to trade out of the first round?

The One-Liner: "The cool thing is you don't need to be an expert!"

Yes, They're Booing The Man

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell sees a lot of screen time during the draft. If you don't know what he looks like … Well … You'll know it's him when you hear the crowd mercilessly booing.

While it might feel rude, it's not. It's healthy! It's necessary! And if f*cking cathartic! Here’s why:

  • Goodell is a 5-foot-11 placeholder for fans' frustrations over the last season (or decade, depending on how bad your team is).
  • Goodell is a 67-year-old meat shield for all the sh*tty calls fans have witnessed from the referees (even if they calls were correct).
  • Goodell is a suited-up punching bag for your favorite team's worst decisions.

Goodell takes the heat. Every single time.

And even if you have no dog in this fight, you can at least respect the theatrics involved, right?

The Mocks Keep Moving

Anyone who has been watching the mock drafts this offseason knows that, aside from the first overall pick, everything has shifted week after week.

Hell, as a Saints fan, I've heard that we're: Trading up, trading back, drafting Carnell Tate, drafting an EDGE, and drafting Jordyn Tyson—all with absolute certainty. And that was all within the last 14 days or so!

The mocks have been moving all offseason long and they'll continue to move around until the very last minute. Even once the draft starts, everything will get shaken up again as teams start making deals and trading while on the clock.

It's all part of the experience.

Just promise me one thing … Don't fall for your arrogant buddy's claims that he "knew this would happen" after every pick is announced.

Respect The Clock

Remember how stressful it was to pick dodgeball teams in middle school? Well, selecting the best rookie for your NFL team is a little more intense than picking Derek from a lineup of awkward tweens because he got a sweet, new pair of Adidas for his birthday last weekend.

Simply put: GMs take their time while picking players for their NFL-sized dodgeball teams.

With only eight minutes per pick in Round 1, teams only have 480 seconds to make calls if they’d like to trade down, field calls from teams who want to trade up and react to whatever pick just came in before theirs.

If you can, try to imagine Wolf of Wall Street levels of high pressure. The stakes have quite literally never been higher!

If you've ever wished for more time during your fantasy football draft (you have), you'll understand. Respect the clock.

Enjoy the Backstories

In an effort to keep viewers entertained during the lengthy clock times between picks, we're going to hear a ton of backstories for these new rookies. You'll hear the good, the bad and (sometimes) the ugly.

Enjoy it for what it is: A story.

The narratives we're fed on draft night won't necessarily translate into the NFL. So if the talking heads tell you that some rookie saved a puppy from a burning building, that doesn't mean he's fast enough to evade Myles Garrett.

Enjoy the stories. But don't let them cloud your fantasy draft judgement.

Don't Stress the Livestream

If you can't watch the draft live, don't sweat it.

Fantasy Life will have every recap you need over the next few days as the draft unfolds.
