Jalen Hurts Ruled Out For Week 6: Fantasy Fallout For The Eagles Offense
Joe Metz breaks down the fantasy football impact of Jalen Hurts’ absence with Tanner McKee under center against the Panthers.
In an unexpected turn of events on Thursday, Jalen Hurts has been ruled out for Sunday’s matchup with the Panthers due to a superficial blood clot, and Tanner McKee will step in as the Eagles’ QB1. For an offense that was already sputtering, this is about the last thing it needed.
And the betting market agrees. Our own Zain Dhanani flagged the movement: the Eagles opened as 1.5-point favorites with a 41.5-point total.
Now?
They’re 3.5-point underdogs, and the total has dropped to 38.5. Hurts’ passing yard prop opened at 207.5; McKee’s sits at 187.5. A five-point swing in the spread over a quarterback change tells you everything you need to know. Lower your expectations for this entire offense accordingly.
How Tanner McKee Changes The Eagles Offense For Fantasy Football
McKee is a pocket passer who is far less likely to take off and run than Hurts. That’s bad news for the offense’s efficiency, but there’s a sliver of a silver lining: plays that would’ve ended in a Hurts scramble or designed run now become throws or handoffs. From a pure volume standpoint, that could be a slight upgrade for the pass catchers and the RB1.
Speaking of which, bump up the RB1, whoever that is. If Saquon Barkley returns from injury, he gets the boost. If Barkley sits, Dameon Pierce steps in, and Matthew Berry has him as a top-15 RB in that scenario.
The problem is what the backs are running behind. The Eagles have the worst-ranked run-blocking unit in the league and rank bottom-five in pass blocking over the last two weeks with their current line (no Cam Jurgens, no Lane Johnson). The Panthers bring a respectable front seven, so running room could be tough to find. The volume should be there; the efficiency might not.
Eagles Pass Catchers Fantasy Value Without Jalen Hurts
DeVonta Smith should be leaned on as McKee’s No. 1 WR if he returns, and Dallas Goedert profiles as the classic backup-QB safety blanket at tight end.
Makai Lemon is the sneaky name to watch. He’s earning a strong 0.35 targets per route run, but on a 0.4-yard aDOT, which basically makes his targets glorified handoffs. If McKee is looking to get the ball out quickly over the middle against pressure (and with this O-line, he will be), Lemon could see a volume bump. Just don’t expect many explosive plays.
Upgrade The Panthers DST
A backup QB, an offensive line held together with duct tape and prayers, and a sub-40 total? That’s not a matchup, that’s a buffet. Fire up the Panthers DST as a streamer this week that's ready to feast.
Bottom Line: Who To Start From The Eagles In Week 6
I’m not excited about this offense at all. Smith is a start if he’s active. I’m OK with Goedert as a spot-start if you’re in a bind at tight end. Pierce is in the RB2/flex mix if Barkley is out. Everyone else sits.
