Fantasy Football Rankings: Justin Jefferson Stands Out For Week 9

Alex Cupps breaks down his Week 9 fantasy football rankings and identifies who he's highest and lowest on relative to the Fantasy Life consensus.

Published Updated

Welcome to the Week 9 fantasy football rankings edition of Cupps’ Cupboard! Every Friday this season, I’m going through my rankings for the upcoming week of games - identifying the players I have the biggest deltas on compared to Fantasy Life’s expert consensus, along with examining advanced metrics and utilization data.

As someone with a data-heavy background and overall approach to fantasy football, my rankings are created using a blend of several inputs:

  • Fantasy Life weekly fantasy football projections, adjusted using fantasy football DvP rankings
  • Prediction market data (essentially taking the current prices on various yardages, touchdowns, receptions, etc., and creating implied fantasy point projections)
  • Vegas prop lines (rush/rec yards + receptions for pass catchers, pass/rush yards for quarterbacks). I will commonly refer to this as a player’s ‘Vegas Base’ projection: essentially, the floor a player offers without any touchdown odds

Using these sources as a baseline, I create my own hybrid projection system for each position and adjust from there.

Let’s get right into it.

Quarterback I Am High On In My Week 9 Fantasy Football Rankings

KC_chiefs-logo.svgPatrick Mahomes

  • Fantasy Life: QB9
  • My Rank: QB4 (+5)

Mahomes has found himself on the opposite side of this column as the QB I’m lowest on against the market quite often this season. Not this time.

Mahomes and the Chiefs get the New York Jets in Week 9, currently 19th in DvP against the QB position (0.91 more points on average per week), and the market absolutely loves this spot for him:

  • Fantasy Life’s DvP-adjusted projections: 19.2 points (QB8)
  • Prediction markets: 21.0 points (QB4)
  • Vegas base projection: 11.0 points (QB9)

When it comes to the top-12 weekly conversation, Mahomes has found himself on the outside looking in quite a bit this season. However, with Rashee Rice back in the mix and a much softer matchup than the last two (SEA and DEN on the road), I like this as a major bounceback spot.

QB I'm Low On In My Week 9 Fantasy Rankings

LA_rams-logo.svgMatthew Stafford

  • Fantasy Life: QB11
  • My Rank: QB14 (-3)

On paper, this is a smash spot for Stafford from a fantasy perspective. The Washington Commanders are 30th in DvP against QBs, allowing 5.3 more points on average every week. Yet he doesn’t quite look like a QB1 in the market data:

  • Prediction markets: 17.9 points (QB14)
  • Vegas base projection: 10.4 points (QB14)

Combine this with the fact that Stafford has not surpassed 20 fantasy points in a single game since week 5, and it has me a little worried. There’s no denying the upside here against a soft Washington defense, but I’d temper expectations a bit.

Running Backs I'm High On In My Fantasy Football Rankings For Week 9

NYG_giants-logo.svgDevin Singletary

  • Fantasy Life: RB38
  • My Rank: RB32 (+6)

I’m pretty excited about what Singletary’s role could look like in Week 9. At the time I’m writing this, Cam Skattebo is still not practicing after injuring his hamstring at the end of their Week 7 matchup (before their bye last week), and if he doesn’t suit up, it’s looking like the Singletary show in New York.

Even if Skattebo does play, I still think Singletary profiles like a mid-range RB3 at worst. Najee Harris has been released, and Tyrone Tracy is on IR, so the backfield figures to be pretty consolidated.

Additionally, NYG gets the Eagles in Week 9, and while they're a middle-of-the-road matchup for RBs (13th in DvP), they do allow the third-most rushing yards per game across the league.

If you’re looking for a spot-start with upside if Skattebo doesn’t play or is limited, Devin Singletary would be my guy here.

RB I'm Low On In My Week 9 Fantasy Rankings

GB_packers-logo.svgJosh Jacobs

  • Fantasy Life: RB13
  • My Rank: RB17 (-4)

Jacobs has had an insanely hot start to his 2026 campaign - through two games, he is averaging 21.6 fantasy points, good for RB3 this year. Obviously, this is a small sample, and I expect this number to come down quite a bit - I wouldn’t be surprised to see some regression this week.

The Packers get the Patriots in Week 9, currently 3rd in DvP against the running back position, allowing nearly 4 fewer points per game than the average matchup. The market is a bit cautious on Jacobs here as well:

  • Fantasy Life’s DvP-adjusted projections: 10.3 points (RB21)
  • Prediction markets: 13.1 points (RB13)
  • Vegas base projection: 8.6 points (RB18)

If you have Jacobs, it would be hard to sit him after such an awesome start. I’m just tempering expectations here a bit.

Wide Receiver I'm Higher On In My Week 9 Fantasy Rankings

MIN_vikings-logo.svgJustin Jefferson

  • Fantasy Life: WR11
  • My Rank: WR6 (+5)

Justin Jefferson managers, rejoice! It’s been announced that the Vikings will likely start Carson Wentz in Week 9 over Kyler Murray, who is “dealing with a bit of a hamstring issue” and was deemed week-to-week.

This is awesome news for Justin Jefferson. In 2026 so far, he’s performed massively better with Wentz than Murray on a per-route basis:

Jefferson with Murray:

  • 0.46 fantasy points/route
  • 0.24 targets/route
  • 1.81 yards/route

Jefferson with Wentz:

  • 0.74 fantasy points/route
  • 0.28 targets/route
  • 2.89 yards/route

The market projection data sees this as well and absolutely loves him this week:

  • Fantasy Life’s DvP-adjusted projections: 14.8 points (WR4)
  • Prediction markets: 14.2 points (WR7)
  • Vegas base projection: 11.2 points (WR4)

The matchup couldn’t be better for JJ and the Vikings from a fantasy perspective either. They’re playing the Bills on Monday night, who are currently 31st in DvP, allowing nearly 5 points more to the WR position on average.

Give me all the JJ this week. Bounceback incoming.

WR I'm Low On In My Fantasy Rankings For Week 9

NO_saints-logo.svgDevaughn Vele

  • Fantasy Life: WR47
  • My Rank: WR52 (-5)

Not a massive difference here between myself and Fantasy Life expert consensus when it comes to Vele, but he was someone I wanted to bring up anyway.

Vele has been an awesome streaming option so far. Through seven games, he’s averaging 12.3 fantasy points, making him the WR29 in points per game.

Unfortunately, it’s about to get a whole lot harder to trust him in our starting lineups. Jordyn Tyson, the Saints first-round pick from the 2026 draft, is set to make his NFL debut in Week 9. Tyson, who’s missed the first eight weeks due to an injury suffered this past summer, says he “feels more explosive than ever” after returning to practice this week.

Good news for the Saints offense and Tyler Shough? Absolutely.

For Devaughn Vele and (less so) Chris OIave? Not as much.

I have Tyson as the WR48 and Vele at WR52, so I’m projecting him to be immediately leapfrogged by the rookie. It was fun while it lasted, Mr. Vele. Thanks for the memories!

Tight End I'm High On In My Week 9 Fantasy Football Rankings

IND_colts-logo.svgTyler Warren

  • Fantasy Life: TE7
  • My Rank: TE5 (+2)

I understand how it might sound insane to say I am higher on ANY part of this Indianapolis Colts passing offense when they consistently look like the worst unit in the league … but I am unreasonably excited about Tyler Warren’s potential this week.

The Colts get the Dallas Cowboys, a relatively solid matchup for tight ends (20th in DvP against the position), and while the Colts offense has been abhorrent, Warren’s role remains that of a top tight end in the league. Last week in the 42-7 blowout against the Jaguars:

  • 10 targets, 36% target rate
  • 15.0 expected fantasy points

While he didn’t get there from an *actual* fantasy perspective (finishing with 4 catches for 18 yards), this is the type of target volume that can result in a TE1 overall finish any given week - especially when you’re playing against the Dallas Cowboys.

TE I'm Low On In My Week 9 Fantasy Rankings

PHI_eagles-logo.svgDallas Goedert

  • Fantasy Life: TE13
  • My Rank: TE20 (-7)

I just don’t want anything to do with the Eagles receiving weapons in this game - plain and simple. Tanner McKee is being replaced by Joe Milton, who currently has the second-lowest passing O/U across all 30 QBs in Week 9 at 189.5 - behind guys like Shedeur Sanders and Gardner Minshew.

The matchup doesn’t help, either. The Eagles are playing the New York Jets, who are currently 11th in DvP against the tight end position, allowing nearly 2 points less on average. I get that Goedert figures to be a top target in this offense that looks to be without DeVonta Smith and Dontayvion Wicks for another week, but it might not matter much if the offense as a whole is bottom 3 across the league.

If you have Goedert, I’d look at other options. Guys like Eli Raridon, Greg Dulcich, and Mike Gesicki are all widely available streamers that I’d start over him this week.
