Fantasy Football Injury Report Week 2: Brock Purdy Is Out. Possible Replacements And More Updates
Adam Ronis and Jorge Martin examine the NFL injuries impacting fantasy football for Week 2, headlined by San Francisco teammates George Kittle and Brock Purdy.
So much for a quiet start to the 2025 NFL season from an injury standpoint. There already have been some doozies, with George Kittle going on IR for a hamstring injury that will knock him out of at least four games. His quarterback Brock Purdy is going to join him on the sidelines for at least one game. Maybe more.
We're headed to Week 2, and this injury report will focus on players important to fantasy football. So let's get to it, starting with the 49ers' signal-caller.
Fantasy Football Injury Report For Week 2
Quarterback
Brock Purdy (San Francisco 49ers)
HC Kyle Shanahan called Purdy a “longshot” to play, and now reports are that the QB is expected to miss anywhere from 2-5 weeks. Considering the injuries the 49ers have already had to deal with, this is another heavy blow. Mac Jones is the backup, and the bright side is that he was able to feed Brian Thomas Jr. during his 2024 breakout. If he can feed Ricky Pearsall in their matchup against the Saints’ rebuilding defense, fantasy managers will be happy. Christian McCaffrey should easily see 20+ touches. UPDATE: Purdy was ruled out on Friday, with Jones now stepping in as the starter. That just reaffirmed that CMC is the consensus RB1 on the week. As for fantasy managers looking for a starter in place of Purdy, our QB Streamers feature has plenty of options.
Running Back
Jonathan Taylor (Indianapolis Colts)
Jonathan Taylor was reported to have taken a hit to the neck in Week 1, but HC Shane Steichen said that JT would be fine soon enough. He’s been back at practice and not on the injury report, so nothing to see here ahead of a tough matchup against the Broncos.
Wide Receiver
Chris Godwin (Tampa Bay Buccaneers)
Godwin returned to practice in a limited capacity on Thursday. Godwin had a second surgery in the spring on his ankle. Godwin is still expected to be out until Weeks 5-6. The team didn’t place him on injured reserve to let him practice. UPDATE: Godwin did not practice on Friday, making it unlikely he'd be back on the field for the MNF contest against the Texans.
Christian Kirk (Houston Texans)
After missing Week 1 one with a hamstring injury, Kirk still didn’t return to practice on Thursday. It’s likely Kirk misses another week. The only safe play for the Texans at wide receiver is Nico Collins due to the awful offensive line play. UPDATE: Kirk has yet to practice, so it's trending like he won't play. Collins remains the only Texans skill player to target.
Drake London (Atlanta Falcons)
It’s a good start to the week for Drake London after he missed the final minutes of the loss to the Buccaneers on Sunday with a shoulder injury. London was limited in practice on Wednesday and Thursday. London has 54 targets in four games with Michael Penix. UPDATE: London no longer has an injury designation, so start him with confidence against the Viking pass defense that allowed the most points to WR last season.
Puka Nacua (Los Angeles Rams)
Nacua suffered a cut above his right eye in the opener against Houston, but missed little time and still caught 10 of 11 targets for 130 yards. He was not on the practice report and practiced fully the first two days of the week, so he should be fine for Week 2 at the Titans.
Darnell Mooney (Atlanta Falcons)
Mooney missed most of training camp with a shoulder injury and was limited in practice leading up to Week 1 and didn’t play. Mooney started the week with limited practices on Wednesday and Thursday. It would be encouraging to see a full practice from Mooney before considering him in your starting lineup. UPDATE: Mooney no longer has an injury designation, so he should make his season debut. While he could start slowly after missing part of the runup to the season, the matchup may be too choice to pass u starting him.
Jauan Jennings (San Francisco 49ers)
Jennings missed the first two days of practice after injuring his shoulder in Week 1. This is cause for concern, because with Kittle going on IR, the pass-catching corps for the 49ers is really depleted. See Purdy’s writeup above for how the offense could run through CMC and Pearsall if Jennings can’t go. UPDATE: Jennings got in a limited practice on Friday, so we'll be watching the inactives on Sunday ahead of the 49ers-Saints 1 p.m. ET kickoff.
Jaylen Waddle (Miami Dolphins)
A minor shoulder injury for Waddle in Week 1 limited him to a 17% target share. He got in limited practices both days, which has him trending toward playing against a New England defense that allowed Geno Smith to pass for 362 yards last week. The game is in Miami’s heat, which often stifles visitors early in the season.
Xavier Worthy (Kansas City Chiefs)
These reports tend to be bad news most of the time and Worthy was a pleasant surprise with him at practice Thursday in a limited capacity after dislocating his shoulder early in the first quarter against the Chargers. There was a chance he would miss a lot of time. Worthy had some extra padding on his right shoulder. Worthy has a chance to play Sunday against the Eagles or at least miss minimal time. UPDATE: Worthy got in a pair of limited to end the week, but has been ruled out. Hollywood Brown drew 16 targets in the opener, but if he's not available, Tyquan Thornton might be a dart throw after he had positive training camp reports. This game environment (47 points) could signal a shootout, so bargain pieces like Thornton and JuJu Smith-Schuster should be considered.
Tight End
Brock Bowers (Las Vegas Raiders)
Bowers is dealing with a knee injury and didn’t practice Thursday. The Raiders play Monday night in the second game of the doubleheader and the key will be the Friday and Saturday practices. Bowers said he wasn’t sure if he will play and hopes to. Make sure you have a replacement now in case Bowers is out. Michael Mayer would see an increase in targets if Bowers is out. UPDATE: Bowers has not practiced ahead of the MNF game against the Chargers, so it's looking like Mayer could be the TE to target if he hasn't already been picked up.
Evan Engram (Denver Broncos)
Finally, some good news at the position. Evan Engram left last week’s game with a calf injury and following a limited practice on Wednesday, Engram was a full participant on Thursday and is likely good to go. UPDATE: He closed the week with two straight full practices. He's a go.
Dallas Goedert (Philadelphia Eagles)
Injuries tend to pop up out of nowhere on Wednesdays and Goedert is the latest example. Goedert has a knee injury and didn’t practice on Thursday. If Goedert is out, A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith get upgraded. They have produced more whenever Goedert has been out. UPDATE: Goedert has been ruled out, which upgrades AJB and Smith. Last year, the pair produced at least two games each of at least 97 yards and a TD when Goedert sat Weeks 14-17. This game will see some points, so start your studs.
Isaiah Likely (Baltimore Ravens)
Isaiah Likely missed last week with a foot injury and is shaping up to miss at least another week. Likely didn’t practice on Thursday. He had surgery at the end of July. Likely being out helps Mark Andrews, despite him only getting 1 catch for 5 yards last week. Lamar Jackson completed only 14 passes. UPDATE: Likely has been ruled out. Look for a bounceback game from Andrews.
