Early 2026 Fantasy Football RB Handcuff Tiers: TreVeyon Henderson Leads Tier A

Ian Hartitz breaks down how he ranks and tiers the RB Handcuffs for 2026 fantasy football before the NFL Draft shakes up the landscape.

Handcuff running backs are backups who are often *one* injury to their team's starter away from suddenly becoming high-end fantasy football assets. Of course, individual talent level, offensive scoring upside and general team philosophy with deploying committees all heavily factor into each unique equation, making the process of tiering handcuff running backs more of an art than a science.

But hey, if it were easy, everyone would do it! Accordingly, let's make today a great day to be great and break down the five tiers of handcuff running backs ahead of the 2026 season. Note that players are listed in order of ranking preference inside each individual tier.

Best RB Handcuffs For Fantasy Football 2026

Tier A RB Handcuffs: FLEX with benefits

You can probably already start these guys in the FLEX if needed, and the ceiling is the moon if their competition misses time.

Henderson's up-and-down rookie campaign still featured him showing off some tantalizing big-play upside with 17.6 PPR points per game (RB7) during Weeks 10-18 last season. … Corum is essentially a Kyren Williams clone and actually managed to carve out an average of 11.2 opportunities per game in Weeks 7-18 … Harvey couldn't match J.K. Dobbins' effectiveness as a rusher, but the rising second-year talent is a dynamic receiver who managed to return RB8 production following the team's Week 12 bye … Monangai turned 29 touches into 198 total yards in his only game without D'Andre Swift; he averaged 13.7 opportunities per game across da Bears' final 10 contests … Mason quietly was the RB6 in Next-Gen Stats' rushing yards OVER expected per carry and is a candidate to leap Aaron Jones on the depth chart independent of an injury … Dowdle overtook Chuba Hubbard early in 2025 and supplied some BOOM performances, something that is on the table again in Pittsburgh with old friend Mike McCarthy … Gainwell has the sort of explosive pass-catching ability that fantasy managers dream of seeing in a full-time role—hat's on the table if Bucky Irving struggles to stay healthy again.

Tier B RB Handcuffs: One injury away from being on the cover of waiver wire articles

Unlikely to offer much, if any, standalone value. But if RB1 goes down? We'll INSTANTLY be talking about spending a very high number of FAAB to acquire their services.

Rookie year Marks was painfully inefficient as a rusher, but still handled at least 15 touches in all but two of his final 10 games … Spears is a gifted pass catcher and tackle-breaking machine, although it remains to be seen if the new coaching staff views him as a capable three-down back … Bigsby's advanced rushing metrics are borderline erotic, but Will Shipley could steal work on pass downs … Tracy averaged 18.1 opportunities per game following Cam Skattebo's season-ending ankle injury … Pacheco is the only RB behind Jahmyr Gibbs on the Lions depth chart with more than 10 career touches … The other B Robinson in Atlanta could instantly push for 20 touches per game if anything happened to Mr. Bijan.

Tier C RB Handcuffs: Probable leader, but we have questions

Best guess is that these men would step up into their team's RB1 role should their starter miss time. That said: It's a guess for a reason.

Each of Davis, Rodriguez and Allen has some pass-game competition concerns, while we simply didn't get a chance to see how prioritized Davis, Brooks and Guerendo would actually be without their team's respective lead back in 2025. Brooks could shoot up a tier with reports of truly good health.

Tier D RB Handcuffs: We're saying there's a chance

We don't know. We can't know. But I've got my suspicions. I've got my f*cking suspicions.

Wilson is the best candidate to actually earn some level of standalone value with Zach Charbonnet (ACL) actively banged up, and we could see Mike McDaniel do some fun things with speedy Keaton Mitchell. Otherwise, expecting much out of any of these dudes feels like pretty wishful thinking—but damnit, if still somehow believing in MarShawn Lloyd is wrong, I don't want to be right.

Tier F RB Handcuffs: Muddled committees and/or unknown backfields

What a complete mess. Ask your dog to pick. Call Grandma and see what she thinks. Their guesses are as good as mine as to what happens if RB1 goes down in these spots.

These situations should gain clarity as we get into August, but for now, it's tough to have much, if any, confidence in the actual pecking order for all parties involved.
