Defense (DST) Streamers For Week 6 Fantasy Football: The Chiefs Are A Priority Add

Jonathan Fuller breaks down his three favorite DST streamers to target on the Week 6 waiver wire.

Last week was a great one for the top two streaming defenses featured in our article. The Bengals scored 8 fantasy points while the 49ers put up an impressive 18, enough to swing fantasy matchups. Week 6 brings four teams on bye, with the Bengals, Lions, Dolphins, and Vikings all off this week. That will force some managers to the waiver wire in addition to those that are streaming due to matchups.

Strategy For Streaming Defenses In Fantasy Football Week 6

When figuring out which defense I want to start in any given week, I am primarily looking for DSTs with the ability to create sacks and turnovers rather than minimizing points allowed to the other team, although those two things are correlated. I think this is one of the bigger mistakes fantasy managers make when thinking about fantasy defenses. As you will see in this article, I am generally focused on three things: offensive line play, QB turnover rates, and game script.

For this article, I will only consider DSTs that are rostered in fewer than 50% of leagues on Yahoo. When selecting a streaming defense, the upcoming week is by far the most important, but I will also point out when there are favorable upcoming schedules that will allow you to roster the same defense for a few weeks.

A couple of quick honorable mentions before I dive in: The Atlanta Falcons face the Chicago Bears in Week 6. If I had to bet, I think Caleb Williams will return in that game, but if not, I would make Atlanta my third-favorite streaming option ... Also worth noting, the New England DST is rostered in 51% of leagues, so they technically don't qualify for this article, but if they are available in your league, they would be my second favorite streaming option for next week when they take on the Jets.

Week 6 Fantasy Football Defense (DST) Streamers

Kansas City Chiefs - 21% rostered

The Chiefs are coming off of a bye and get to face the disaster that is the Chargers offense. Los Angeles dropped to 0-5 with another disappointing loss, this time against the Broncos. Justin Herbert is now tied for the league lead in interceptions with 7 and has taken the second-most sacks this season. There are some legitimate excuses; the Chargers continue to suffer a ridiculous number of injuries, but Herbert is also not playing good football. PFF has him graded with the most turnover-worthy plays (13), which matches the eye test. Every week there are a few Herbert throws that look like he is trying to throw it to the defense.

The early line has Kansas City favored by 8.5 points, which feels generous ... to the Chargers. Not only has the Chiefs offense been clicking so far, but their defense has been playing pretty well considering how many new pieces they have had to incorporate. Through four games, they have forced seven turnovers and will likely get the chance to add to that total against the turnover-prone Chargers offense. With an extra week of rest and preparation headed into this matchup, I expect Kansas City to put up a good fantasy score.

After this matchup, the Chiefs face the Seahawks, Broncos, and Jets, which are all games where they should be startable if their defense is relatively healthy. They are a priority waiver add for me this week with the hope that I don't have to stream the position for a while.

Buffalo Bills - 20% rostered

The Bills were dropped in a ton of leagues due to their MNF matchup with the Rams in Week 5. At the time of writing, that game has not happened yet, but I am confident that I will still like Buffalo as a streaming option as long as they don't suffer a number of injuries to their defense.

Through their first four games, Buffalo has recorded 10 sacks and forced 5 turnovers. They have been an opportunistic defense that is capitalizing on the pressure that their offense puts on opposing teams to keep up with Josh Allen. They have averaged 4.5 fantasy points per game despite giving up more than 26 points per game to opposing offenses in their first four games.

I expect a similar script to play out in Week 6 against the Las Vegas Raiders. Buffalo should be able to put up points in that game, which means Las Vegas will be forced to try to keep up. This is supported by the Bills being 6-point road favorites and the 53-point game total. The Raiders will probably have some success on offense, but Kirk Cousins will put the ball at risk and is not very mobile, so there should be opportunities for sacks and turnovers. That's all we can control when selecting our DST, and then we have to hope that they can turn those opportunities into fantasy points.

Indianapolis Colts - 4% rostered

The Colts did not deliver against the Steelers in Week 5, but I think they remain a streamable option in Week 6 because they get the best possible matchup against Cam Ward and the Titans. Tennessee is averaging just 11.6 points per game, and Ward does not appear to have taken a leap in his second season. Through five games, he has just 3 passing TDs to go along with 3 interceptions and 10 sacks. To his credit, he only ranks in the middle of the pack when it comes to turnover-worthy plays, but he also rarely creates big plays for the Tennessee offense, as evidenced by their low explosive play rate.

As I wrote about in the intro, I would check to see if the Patriots are available in your league before turning to the Colts, but if you need an option that is available in virtually every league, Indianapolis presents a serviceable option in Week 6.
