Defense (DST) Streamers For Week 3 Fantasy Football: Target The Packers, Panthers & More
Jonathan Fuller breaks down the top three DST streamers to target on the waiver wire for Week 3 of the fantasy football season.
Last week didn't produce fireworks as the prior week did, but we still had plenty of fun games, including several upsets of heavy favorites. We also had several notable injuries, with Caleb Williams and Jayden Daniels set to miss extended time. This impacts the defense (DST) landscape, because their opponents will be more attractive streaming options when facing backup QBs. Their Week 3 opponents (Philadelphia and Seattle) do not qualify for this article, but moving forward, those may be offenses we target based on the play for Tyson Bagent and Marcus Mariota.
Defense (DST) Streaming Strategy For Fantasy Football Week 3
When figuring out which defense I want to start in any given week, I am primarily looking for DSTs with the ability to create sacks and turnovers rather than minimizing points allowed to the other team, although those two things are correlated. I think this is one of the bigger mistakes fantasy managers make when thinking about fantasy defenses. As you will see in this article, I am generally focused on three things: offensive line play, QB turnover rates, and game script.
Now that we are two weeks into the season, we will be focused on true streaming options. I will only consider DSTs that are rostered in fewer than 50% of leagues on Yahoo. When selecting a streaming defense, the upcoming week is by far the most important, but I will also point out when there are favorable upcoming schedules that will allow you to roster the same defense for a few weeks.
Fantasy Football Defenses To Stream For Week 3
Green Bay Packers - 23% rostered
I wrote about Green Bay last week, but they remain well below the 50% threshold, so they are my top defense to spotlight this week. They delivered a solid performance against the Jets, scoring five fantasy points, primarily thanks to the four sacks they recorded. They now face the Atlanta Falcons on Thursday night football. Atlanta has been one of the worst offenses in the NFL through two weeks and just benched Cooper Rush for undrafted rookie Jack Strand. Those two just combined for a miserable 129 passing yards, three turnovers, and three sacks taken.Â
There is a chance that Michael Penix could start this game, which would change the recommendation, but if anyone else is at QB, then the Packers are a priority streaming option. Since this is the Thursday night game, this is the rare situation where you could roster two defenses and cut one on Thursday depending on who is starting at QB for Atlanta. You could also just cut Green Bay for another streaming defense if needed.
Carolina Panthers - 6% rostered
Carolina's defense bounced back in a big way in Week 2. After giving up 59 points in Week 1, they held Atlanta to just 3 points while forcing five turnovers and scoring a defensive TD. In normal DST scoring, they put up 24 points and were the top-scoring defense by a wide margin.Â
The Panthers now get to take on the Browns in Week 3. Cleveland did look better in Week 2, but they remain an offense I want to target, as Deshaun Watson regularly puts the ball at risk and has taken seven sacks through two games. I will need to see several more weeks of improved play before backing off of my stance that we want to target the Browns every week.Â
The Carolina defense is also benefiting from how functional their offense is. The Panthers are sustaining drives and putting points on the board, which gives their defense time to rest and forces the opposing offense into situations where they have to pass. Carolina is favored by 2.5 points on the road in Cleveland in a game with a 41.5-point total, which makes them a good streaming option available in almost every league.
Cincinnati Bengals - 6% rostered
Through two games, the Bengals look like one of the most improved defenses in the NFL. They've recorded four sacks in each of their first two games and have scored double-digit fantasy points in both of those contests as well. Fantasy players are so used to Cincinnati having a bad defense that I think it is going to take a while for people to catch up. This makes them a nice under-the-radar waiver add heading into their Week 3 matchup with the Steelers. Pittsburgh looked lost on offense against the Patriots, scoring just three points, taking four sacks, and turning the ball over twice.
The Bengals' revamped pass rush should be able to attack the immobile Aaron Rodgers. Cincinnati also benefits from their own offense having the ability to put points on the board in bunches. They haven't quite hit their peak this season, but Joe Burrow and Co. are always capable of jumping out to a quick lead and forcing the opposing offense to keep up. As we saw in Week 2, that can be a recipe for disaster for this Pittsburgh offense. Through two games, the Steelers rank dead last in yards per play, and they haven't played any elite defenses in that stretch.
