David Montgomery Dynasty Fantasy Football Value: A Win-Win Dynasty Trade Candidate In 2026
Sam Wallace breaks down what the recent change of scenery means for David Montgomery as he enters his age-29 season with a bell-cow workload on tap.
After spending the first seven years of his career in the NFC North (four with Chicago, three with Detroit), David Montgomery is taking his talents to the Houston Texans.
One of the things I've appreciated the most about Montgomery over the years is his reliability. Seriously. Especially at the RB position, oftentimes the best ability is availability, and he's played in 14+ games in six of his seven seasons.
While he enjoyed lead-back duties in Chicago, he played a more complementary role in Detroit. In fact, Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs were easily the best backfield tandem in the entire league from 2023 to 2025. In that span, they scored an absurd 82 total TDs (49 for Gibbs, 33 for Monty) and were pivotal in the Lions' success during that time.
So, on a new team, what is David Montgomery's dynasty fantasy football value ahead of 2026?
What Is David Montgomery's Value In Dynasty Fantasy Football?
Now 29 years old, Montgomery signed a two-year, $16.5 million contract with the Texans that included $10 million guaranteed.
All signs are pointing towards Montgomery having the chance to be the lead option once again. Woody Marks is the only other viable option on the depth chart, and he doesn't pose much of a threat to the incoming veteran. In fact, our fantasy football projections have Montgomery running away with the job, no pun intended.
Montgomery
- 230 rushing attempts
- 995 rushing yards
- 9 total TDs
Marks
- 126 rushing attempts
- 487 rushing yards
- 4 total TDs
So, how do you value a 29-year-old proven veteran joining a new offense? Montgomery is the perfect trade candidate for any dynasty manager looking to shore up their RB2 spot this season. He's a proven, reliable asset who brings excellent leadership to the locker room, and the Texans have had nothing but high praise since he joined the organization.
I'm fine sending a future second-round rookie pick away for Montgomery, assuming it's a mid/late pick. Actually, Montgomery fits the profile of how I like to approach RBs at this stage of his career. While he was crushing it with the Lions, it would have been relatively expensive to try to acquire him. Now that he's with the Texans, even though he's pushing 30 years old, the general consensus has him outside the top-24 RBs.
That makes a future second-round pick the ideal range to begin trade negotiations. I also think this could be one of those coveted win-win scenarios for both managers. If you're not looking to push for a fantasy championship in the short term, now is the perfect time to capitalize on the new role and cash out while you can.
The only way this could go south is if Montgomery suffers some sort of long-term injury. Given his age and relatively short, inexpensive contract, that would likely spell trouble for his dynasty value. However, as mentioned, Montgomery has never given us a reason to doubt his durability. This is shaping up to be one of the rare instances when a veteran RB gets traded late in his career and actually experiences a resurgence both in on-field/fantasy production and dynasty value.
Bottom line, if you have a need at RB, Montgomery offers the ideal blend of stability and upside without breaking the bank. Go win that dynasty fantasy football championship this season.
