Packers vs Jets Picks, Odds, Predictions, and Player Props for Week 2
Justin Carlucci breaks down the Green Bay Packers vs. New York Jets Week 2 matchup from a betting perspective with predictions, picks, and prop bets.
The Packers and Jets enter Week 2 coming off completely different openers. Green Bay suffered another demoralizing loss to Minnesota, while New York went into Nashville and handled Tennessee behind a competent, controlled performance from Geno Smith.
Green Bay Packers vs. New York Jets Betting Odds for Week 2
Spread: Packers -3.5 (-112)
Moneyline: Packers -192; Jets +160
Game Total: Over 44.5 (-110), Under 44.5 (-110)
Green Bay’s loss to Minnesota was ugly.
The Packers have now lost six straight games dating back to last season, and this one came against a Vikings team that played most of the game with Carson Wentz at quarterback. Brian Flores did what Brian Flores does, blitzing at an absurd rate and completely confusing Green Bay’s offensive line.
The Packers had no answer.
Jordan Love barely had time to operate, the run game was nonexistent, and the protection looked completely lost. Flores blitzing at something around 75% is obviously an extreme look. The Jets are not going to copy that exact approach, and Aaron Glenn is not Brian Flores.
But Green Bay’s offensive line is still a concern until it proves otherwise.
The Jets had the opposite kind of Week 1. New York ran the ball down Tennessee’s throat in 98-degree heat, protected Smith, and controlled the game from start to finish. Smith did not light up the box score, but he looked comfortable, efficient, and in command.
That is all the Jets needed.
Prediction & Pick for Packers vs. Jets Week 2 Matchup
The Pick: Jets +3.5 (-108, DraftKings)
Just like Broncos -2.5, this line kind of stinks.
Green Bay is going to be a public side. The Packers have Love, a talented wide receiver room, and a roster that most people still view as more talented than New York’s. People are going to see them catching a bounce-back spot after the Minnesota loss and talk themselves into laying the points.
I get it.
But there is a real range of outcomes where the Jets are simply better than people expected this season.
Garrett Wilson and Breece Hall are healthy, which matters. The Jets have some interesting young talent, including rookie tight end Kenyon Sadiq. The offensive line also looked drastically underrated in Week 1. Tennessee did not record a single sack, and that is huge for a quarterback like Smith.
Geno was one of the better quarterbacks in the NFL from a clean pocket last year. He does not need to be Superman. Give him protection, keep him out of obvious passing situations, and let him distribute the ball to the Jets’ playmakers.
That is exactly what New York did against Tennessee.
The matchup on the other side is what keeps pulling me toward the Jets. Green Bay’s offensive line got overwhelmed last week, and now it has to deal with a New York front featuring Will McDonald and rookie David Bailey. The Jets might not need to blitz anywhere close to the rate Flores did to create issues.
Cliché as it is, this feels like a game in the trenches.
I still think Love is a good quarterback. I still think the Packers’ pass catchers are talented. But the run game was not there, the protection was a mess, and Green Bay’s defense did not do much to inspire confidence, either.
The Jets do not have to win this game outright for this bet to cash. I think they keep it close at home, and there is a real chance they win it.
Give me Jets +3.5.
Best Player Prop Bet for Packers vs. Jets
Garrett Wilson Over 62.5 Receiving Yards (-112, DraftKings)
Wilson looked like the Jets’ clear alpha receiver in Week 1.
He posted a 29% target share and an absurd 49% air-yards share. New York did not even need to throw much against Tennessee, yet Wilson still ran the most routes on the team and dominated the passing-game opportunity.
Those are real WR1 numbers.
It’s only one game, obviously. We do not need to overreact to every Week 1 target share. But Wilson is healthy, he looked like he had some juice, and Smith clearly knows where his top receiver is.
The Packers have not shown me much defensively, and this game projects to be more competitive than New York’s opener. That should mean more passing volume for Smith and more chances for Wilson.
I like Garrett Wilson over 62.5 receiving yards.
