Browns vs Buccaneers Picks, Odds, Predictions, and Player Props for Week 2
Justin Carlucci breaks down the Cleveland Browns vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers Week 2 matchup from a betting perspective with predictions, picks, and prop bets.
Cleveland heads to Tampa Bay after getting absolutely dismantled by Jacksonville in Week 1. The Browns lost 34-10, but it felt like the gap was even wider. The Buccaneers, meanwhile, lost by six in a shootout with Cincinnati, and while Baker Mayfield was reckless with the football at times, Tampa Bay still showed a much more functional offensive identity.
Cleveland Browns vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers Betting Odds for Week 2
Spread: Buccaneers -8.5 (-108, FanDuel)
Moneyline: Buccaneers -395; Browns +310
Game Total: Over 41.5 (-110), Under 41.5 (-110)
Cleveland was never really in the Jacksonville game. The Jaguars look like they could be a serious AFC contender this year, and Liam Coen’s play calling has been exceptional dating back to the second half of last season. Coen and Trevor Lawrence are clearly on the same page, and Jacksonville has a chance to be one of the better offenses in football.
So, I do not want to completely bury Cleveland because it ran into a potentially great offense in Week 1.
But it was still ugly.
The Browns could not find consistent offense and spent almost the entire game chasing. Cleveland threw at a league-average rate overall, ranking 15th, but that number is a little misleading because the Browns played just eight neutral-game-script snaps.
Eight.
That is a tiny sample, obviously. It is Week 1, and pass rates are always going to be opponent- and situation-dependent. Still, only getting eight neutral snaps tells you how quickly Jacksonville grabbed control of that game.
Tampa Bay, on the other hand, played aggressively against Cincinnati. The Buccaneers threw at the seventh-highest rate in football overall, and they were still top 10 in pass rate during neutral situations. Mayfield had some loose moments, but Tampa Bay was able to move the ball and stay in a high-scoring game with a good Bengals offense.
That is a much more encouraging profile heading into this week.
Prediction & Pick for Browns vs. Buccaneers Week 2 Matchup
The Pick: Buccaneers -8.5 (-108, DraftKings)
Eight and a half is a lot to lay in a game with a 41.5-point total. I get the hesitation.
If Mayfield is reckless again, if Cleveland creates a couple short fields, or if the Browns get a weird touchdown through defense or special teams, this number could become uncomfortable in a hurry. Tampa Bay does not need to be awful for Cleveland to cover.
But I still think the Buccaneers are just a much better team than the Browns right now.
Cleveland’s Week 1 issue was not just that it lost badly. It was that the Browns never settled into a game they could play on their terms. They fell behind, barely had any neutral snaps, and then had to operate in a more pass-heavy game script for most of the afternoon.
That could happen again here.
Tampa Bay is not Jacksonville, but it doesn’t need to be. The Bucs are at home, coming off a much more competitive performance, and should have the more aggressive offense from the opening drive. If Tampa Bay gets out in front, Cleveland will once again have to take more chances than it probably wants to.
The Browns could hang around early. But over four quarters, I trust Tampa Bay to make more plays and create more explosive scoring opportunities.
Give me Buccaneers -8.5.
Best Player Prop Bet for Browns vs. Buccaneers
Denzel Boston Anytime Touchdown (+390)
This is actually the bet I like more than the spread.
It doesn't exactly bode well for a Browns touchdown bet when I expect Cleveland to struggle offensively. That is why we are getting +390. But this is not a bet that requires the Browns to have a huge day or suddenly become efficient in the red zone.
We need one real opportunity.
Denzel Boston had an 18% target share in Week 1, which was essentially tied with KC Concepcion and Jerry Jeudy. Four total targets are not a huge volume signal, but his deployment was interesting. Boston ran more than 90% of his routes out wide.
Tampa Bay used one-high safety looks at the second-highest rate in football in Week 1 and played man coverage at a 27% clip, the eighth-highest rate in the league. Again, it is one week. Coverage tendencies will change depending on the opponent.
But if those principles stick, there should be one-on-one chances for Cleveland’s outside receivers.
Boston will be out wide, potentially drawing isolated coverage, and he only needs one deeper shot to cash this bet.
At +390, I think that is a really nice value.
