Atlanta Falcons vs. Carolina Panthers Picks, Odds, Predictions, and Player Props for Week 2

It looks like it could be another long year for the NFC South. All four teams started the year at 0-1, albeit in different ways.
That said, someone is going to pick up a win in Week 2. The Atlanta Falcons will host the Carolina Panthers, and the winner will automatically be tied for first in the division. That makes this a big early-season showdown. It might only take eight or nine wins to win the division for the second straight year, so picking one up in this contest will go a long way.

These two teams played in wildly different game environments in Week 1. The Panthers lost a track meet to the Bears, who could legitimately average 40 points per game this season. The Falcons lost a slog to the Steelers, who seem to still have some magic up their sleeves despite losing Mike Tomlin. We should get a truer indication of these two teams in Week 2, in a more neutral matchup.

The big question for Atlanta is who will be under center? Michael Penix appears destined to start at quarterback once he’s healthy enough to do so, but that could still be a week or two away. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported that Week 2 “may be too early” for Penix, despite the fact that he practiced in full before Week 1.

If he is out once again, it could be Cooper Rush at the helm vs. the Panthers. Tua Tagovailoa is “day-to-day” with an oblique injury, but it feels like the team is looking for any reason not to use him. He was that bad in the preseason.

Unfortunately, Rush doesn’t feel much better than “unplayable” at the moment. He was pretty dreadful vs. the Steelers in Week 1, completing just 12-of-22 passes with two interceptions. Rush looked somewhat competent as the Cowboys’ backup QB, but he’s now 0-3 as a starter over the past two seasons.

The QB uncertainty is great news for the Panthers, who need a refresh after allowing 59 points to the Bears. They allowed more than 550 yards of total offense, including nearly 300 on the ground. It feels impossible that this team scored 37 points and still lost by more than 20, but that’s exactly what happened.

It’s hard to feel good after allowing nearly 60 points, but at least Bryce Young and the passing attack looked pretty sharp. Young had 361 yards and three scores, and Jalen Coker could give this team a huge boost at receiver. It was basically the Teteroia McMillan show last year, but he might have a legit running mate in 2026-27.

Prediction & Pick For Falcons vs. Panthers Week 2 Matchup

The Pick: Panthers -2.5 (-105; FanDuel)

I could see someone trying to talk themselves into the Falcons in this spot, especially if Penix suits up at quarterback. The general public wants very little to do with Atlanta at the moment (29% of the spread bets), making them an appealing contrarian target. In general, zigging when the public is zagging is a pretty sharp strategy early in the year.

Still, I can’t get there. The Falcons were a team I was extremely low on heading into the season, and I see no reason to change course now. Their offense has some talent, but none of that matters if the QB can’t get them the ball. Bijan Robinson still managed to get his in Week 1, but Drake London and Kyle Pitts combined for two catches and 29 yards. That’s simply not going to get the job done.

The Panthers numbers may have been boosted by facing a weak Bears defense in Week 1, but they at least showed signs of life. I see no reason why they can’t move the ball again against a Falcons defense that is missing James Pearce.

I am all the way out on the Falcons passing attack for as long as Penix is sidelined. Ninety of Rush’s 143 passing yards in Week 1 went to Robinson. That is absolutely pitiful. He was merely 4-for-12 when throwing to someone other than Robinson last week, and I don’t expect things to be massively improved vs. the Panthers.

London is one of the top receivers in fantasy when playing with Penix, but he had just five targets and two grabs last week. Getting to five catches might not feel like a particularly high bar to clear, but Rush is going to have to play significantly better for that to happen.
